Why do we set the frame below the ground surface?
Fine sand around the frame can erode with wind and water, so we lower it so the mortar sits higher and protects it. A raised frame leaves gaps that trap sand and cause collapse.
Are temporary braces needed while mortaring?
Yes, fine sand cannot support the frame while mortar is wet. We brace with a wooden rod across the opening inside and external supports until the mortar fully cures.
