Why does the cover level shift between summer and winter?
Black soil under the frame loses moisture in summer so shrinks and lifts the frame, then gains it in winter so swells and lowers it. We use flexible mortar that permits this movement without breaking the seal.
Can the cover be installed before waiting 48 hours for mortar to cure?
No, wet mortar will not grip the frame firmly against sand movement and thermal expansion. If opened early the frame may sink or the cover may shift out of position.
