If absorption is very slow we propose two or three pits at eight metres depth instead of one large pit connected by horizontal distribution pipes. We add a thick layer of coarse sand and broken gravel around each pit to increase contact between water and live soil.

Why does water stay in my yard after rain even though I have a pit?
If soil is dense sand one pit may not suffice. We measure absorption by filling your pit with water and watching it. If very slow we suggest a second or third pit distributed across the yard with pipes connecting them.
Does water seeping from the pit harm the house foundation beside it?
If the pit is far enough from the foundation and soil is sandy, seepage disperses slowly. We recommend at least 3 metres between pit and foundation and add a simple gravel perimeter drain below ground directing any seepage away from walls.
