How do I tell if the thermostat is broken or the element itself?
If water stays cold and the element does not heat at all, the element is usually faulty. But if water warms then cuts off before reaching your usual temperature, the thermostat is at fault. We test both with an ohm meter before deciding which to replace.
Must I drain the entire tank to replace the element?
Usually no, because the element sits below or to the side of the tank so we disconnect it without opening the top. We just close the inlet valve and let water drop slightly, then open the lower drain valve to give space for the new element.
