Can thermal pipe expansion in the desert cause ongoing leaks?
Expansion itself does not leak if we leave enough give at joints. But changing pressure from expansion can loosen a weak joint over time. We use brazed metal fittings not plastic, and test twice yearly to catch any loosening early. Regular maintenance prevents future breaks.
If I bury the pipe in sand, does it need special protection from moisture or animals?
Dry sand holds little moisture, but the pipe needs tough plastic sheathing to protect it from scraping during future digging. Small animals usually cannot break flexible copper, but we advise marking the location clearly. We bury at least 30 centimetres deep and add the route to a property plan so no one digs over it.
